FEMA/DHS Overview

The courses below represent a cooperative effort between The University of Southern Mississippi’s National Center for Spectator Sports Security and Safety (USM/NCS4) and the Texas Engineering Extension Service’s National Emergency Response and Recovery Training Center (TEEX/NERRTC), a member of The Texas A&M University System. Through funding from the Department of Homeland Security, our combined efforts and unique partnership provides the capability to deliver the most comprehensive set of sport security trainings to emergency responders, senior officials, and medical personnel conducting sporting events.

DHS/FEMA Approved Training Workshops

* Sport Event Risk Management AWR-167

This 16-hour curriculum is focused upon building capabilities for multi-agency collaboration. Intact university teams will learn to agree on basic concepts relative to: planning, risk assessment, training, exercising plans, and recovery/ business continuity through scenario-based training modules.

*Sports and Special Events Incident Management MGT-404

This 16-hour course develops athletic department staffs, facility management personnel, campus public safety personnel, emergency response supervisors, and others involved in sports and special event management to better prepare for, manage, and recover from incidents that could occur during a sporting event or other special event.

* Sport Venue Evacuation and Protective Actions MGT-412

The 15-hour Sport Venue Evacuation and Protective Actions Course will provide assistance to sport venue managers to prepare and/or enhance evacuation planning capabilities to assist emergency responders in implementing flexible and scalable evacuation activities.

* Enhanced Sports and Special Events Incident Management MGT-440

This 24-hour course is intended to prepare emergency responders as well as event management personnel, concessionaires, athletic department personnel, and elected and chief executives who would be involved in the preparation for and response to a large-scale incident during sporting or special events.

* Sports and Special Event Enhanced Risk Management and Assessment MGT-466 

This 15-hour course provides participants with tools and methodologies for conducting venue-specific and event-specific risk assessments. In the course, participants will utilize assessment outputs to make risk mitigation decision and determine how to measure the effectiveness of decision-making. 

* Sports and Special Event Public Information and Emergency Notification MGT-467 

This 16-hour course brings planners, operators, communication professionals, government, public safety, and marketing professionals together in an effort to prepare and/or enhance venue and event communication programs. 

* Risk Management for After-School Activities and Interscholastic Athletics AWR-375-W

This 5.5-hour self-paced course uses interactive learning modules to allow participants to identify and develop an increased understanding of risk mitigation and protection activities for after school activities and interscholastic athletics. Individuals responsible for organizing, supervising, and supporting the activities and events will learn and apply best practices for risk management, professional development, communication, and planning.
