Educational Background

Option 1: Work Experience Only
No degree requirement
Minimum of eight (8) years of experience working in a comprehensive safety and security management position*.
Minimum of 50 contact hours directly relating to sports/special event safety and security management.
Option 2: Work Experience and Education
Four-year degree (bachelor’s degree, graduate degree, or global equivalent)
Minimum of four (4) years of experience working in a comprehensive safety and security management position*.
Minimum of 50 contact hours directly relating to sports/special event safety and security management
*The eligibility criteria has been set by the CSSP Commission to ensure that individuals applying for the CSSP credential have the requisite knowledge, skill and ability specified in the Certified Sport Security Professional Examination Content Outline.

Paper and Pencil-Based Exams

NCS⁴ offers a paper and pencil-based exam administration for eligible candidates during the annual National Sports Safety and Security Conference and Exhibition at no cost. Spots are limited. Must pre-register to guarantee a seat in the exam room.

If your application is approved and you fail to schedule and take the exam within the two-year eligibility period, you will forfeit both the application and testing fee. You may file for an extension of your candidacy for consideration by the Certification Commission.

The CSSP exam is offered year-round through our partners at PSI Talent Measurement (formally PAN).

Once NCS⁴ approves your application, you will receive an email with instructions to schedule an examination appointment at a test center nearest to you. PSI has hundreds of test centers available throughout the United States and Canada.

We provide an online review course and a practice exam to help you prepare for the exam. The authoritative references are used by our item writing committee to reference each correct answer on the examination. This list is intended for use as a study aid only and does not guarantee success on the exam. You will need to apply your own knowledge and expertise to answer correctly.

Disclaimer: The New Online CSSP Review Course is usually reserved for CSSP candidates that have applied and been approved to take the CSSP Exam.

Test Admission Procedures

You need to arrive at the test room fifteen (15) minutes prior to the beginning of your test appointment to allow time for the check-in process. If you are more than fifteen (15) minutes late, you will not be permitted to test. Please be sure to take care of any personal needs before appointment check-in.

Testing Center Rules

The following are the rules enforced at all test administrations:

  • Upon arrival, you will be required to present one official, valid piece of identification that meets the following requirements:
    • The ID must be issued by Federal or State Government and must be a Driver's License, U.S. State Issued ID Card, U.S. Passport, U.S. Military ID, U.S. Resident Card/Green Card, U.S. Employment Authorization/Document, U.S. Government issued Visa, U.S. Territory ID (Puerto Rico, Guam, etc.)
    • The ID must bear a PHOTO.
    • The ID must be original. No photocopies or faxes will be accepted.
    • The ID must also be current and legible. Current ID is only valid through the expiration date printed on it.
    • The ID must contain an identical name when compared with the name listed on this scheduling site. If you need to make a change, please do so now by accessing your Profile and editing your personal information. If you arrive at the test center without and ID that meets the above requirements, you will not be permitted to test.

If you fail to bring the proper identification, you will not be allowed to take the exam and will forfeit the exam fee. Please download and review full list of Test Center Rules.

You will receive your official exam score from NCS⁴ with 7-10 business days (those taking the paper and pencil-based exam will receive results two to three weeks after the exam). You will receive a preliminary pass/fail email from PSI after submitting your exam and the NCS⁴ Certification Department will email your official exam results.

The Certified Sport Security Professional must pursue continuing education and professional development in order to maintain their credentials.

All candidates are required to fulfill 90 credits per certification term and submit proper forms to verify their credits. All activities must relate to sport and event security management as defined by the content specifications of the relevant examination, including: Business & Facility Management; Emergency Planning; Emergency Management; Legal & Regulatory; Crowd Management; and Security Principles & Practices.
